Howard Rogers paintings

I have not used photography as a source for several years. In not using photography I m not making a case against, rather I am trying to regain a place of intimacy with the subject. To paint from life, to seize it as it is seems to me to be the most urgent thing I can do. The fact that this necessarily restricts the subject matter, offers me a way of avoiding the rhetoric of some painting. The paintings have progressively become more physical, more engaged with paint as a way of rendering the sensation of seeing.

All the paintings are selected from work completed since 2010.

Working in differing gendres I don’t seek constancy.I welcome the possibility of failure and renounce the reliance on systems and process.

The paintings are not painted in series, although they gather family likeness in retrospect.

Ther are always more things to paint.
